We celebrate today the birthday of Francesco Cavalli, born Pietro Francesco Caletti-Bruni in Crema on 14 February 1602
Cavalli is arguably the composer most associated with our theatre. His Le nozze di Teti e di Peleo (Teatro San Cassiano, 1639) being the earliest complete score and libretto that we know to exist from our theatre today. In that respect, it is often proposed as a good candidate to be the first opera we might to stage in the newly reconstructed Teatro San Cassiano.
To our knowledge, no image of Cavalli exists, though this portrait of his patron, Federico Cavalli, has often been mistakenly taken for our composer. That was, at least, until our consigliera Prof. Ellen Rosand corrected the misconception.
Tanti auguri Maestro!
